The Three Samadhis of The Generation Stage (3/5)

The Three Samadhis

According to the tantras of Nyingmapa, the generation stage consists of three types of samadhi: the samadhi of thusness, the samadhi of universal manifestation, and the causal samadhi.

Through the three samadhis, the three phases in samsara, it's the death, intermediate state, and rebirth.

These three phases can be transformed into the dharmakaya, sambhogakaya, and nirmanakaya of the Buddha. The three kayas are the fruition, the three samadhis are the path, and the three phases in samsara are the impure ground.

The Samadhi of Thusness.
Thusness means realm of truth (dharmadhatu), nature of reality (dharmata), emptiness, and luminosity. The samadhi of thusness is meditation on emptiness. Once the pre-meditation steps of taking refuge, generating Bodhicitta, and praying to the guru have all been completed, practice the samadhi of thusness.
If one has attained realization, just abide in the state of realization, but not too long. One who has not gained realization should maintain firm belief in the view that the nature of all phenomena is emptiness; this is said to be a similar version of the samadhi of thusness—not real samadhi, only close to it.

Through the samadhi of thusness, death can be transformed into or purified as dharmakaya, a practice that is unique to tantra. Although the sutra also practices emptiness, it does not have the power to purify, only to eliminate defilement, because it lacks the tantric view.
Another function of the samadhi of thusness is to destroy the view of eternalists. For in the subsequent practices, all the mandalas of the Buddhas are also perceived to be of an empty nature; nothing exists permanently. Therefore, the samadhi of thusness is able to abolish the eternalist view.
The Samadhi of Universal Manifestation

Universal manifestation refers to phenomena, primarily great compassion. After the completion of the samadhi of thusness, practice great compassion toward sentient beings who have not gained realization of emptiness; it need not be long.

One of the functions of the samadhi of universal manifestation is to transform the bardo body into or purify the body as sambhogakaya.

Although the sutra also practices great compassion, it does not have the ability to purify because it lacks the view that sentient beings are Buddhas already. Another function of the samadhi of universal manifestation is to eradicate the nihilistic view.

When a realized practitioner practices great compassion and loving kindness while in the enlightened state, compassion and loving kindness are in union with emptiness and at once illusory; when the view of Vajrayana is added, this practice is empowered to effect transformation or purification.

If the first two samadhis are missing, a practitioner who is undertaking the practice of the wrathful deity will develop attachment to the wrathful deity due to ignorance of the void nature of the deity; absent compassion, if such a person holds the wrong view or mistaken aspiration at the time of death, he or she may end up being a demon or evil spirit with supernatural power in the next life, causing great harm to sentient beings.

This is why the two samadhis are indispensable. If all the generation stages can be practiced around the framework of these two samadhis, there will be no room for mistake because the practice is based on emptiness and compassion.

Visualization not based on the view of emptiness and compassion is also practiced by non-Buddhists; some of these visualizations are quite powerful as well, but they do not lead to liberation.

In other words, with no concept of emptiness nor foundation in compassion, one cannot attain any supramundane accomplishment in the deity practice.

The Causal Samadhi

Attaining Buddhahood is called the resultant stage. As we have not yet attained Buddhahood, it is called the causal stage. In actuality, all phenomena are the mandala of the Buddha; cause and result are inseparable, but there is still a discrepancy between cause and result on the surface.

The causal samadhi covers a very broad range, including visualizations of all the peaceful and wrathful deities.

*Footnote

For those who have received the empowerment of this Tantric practise, you are reminded not to intentionally or unintentionally disclose the mantra to the public or anyone who may not have the empowerment or permission to practise, and disclosing the mantra intentionally or unintentionally is a form of breaking your Tantric Samaya vows to the lineage masters and Dharma protectors.

Please consult your Guru or a qualified lineage master for Vajrayana practise! Should a devotee even want to start studying and contemplating the Vajrayana practise, then it is truly necessary to first have completed the preliminaries and to be certain that Bodhicitta has arisen and developed in one’s mind.

Vajrayana features countless skillful and powerful methods that, if practised in the proper way, can make the process of accumulation and purification incredibly swift and direct. It is absolutely necessary to have pure motivation and to know that Vajrayana practise is not carried out to increase one’s own ego, power, or self-interest.

Benefit verses
Lha mo la goo yang dak den pei. Lo den gang gi rab den jo peh.
It should be recited with perfect reverence and attitude to the Deity (Dolma).

So dang thaw rang lang par cheh neh. Dren peh mi jig tam cheh tab ter.

If affected by the most terrible poison. Whether ingested, drunk, or from a living being.

Zo pa dang ni thung pa nyi kyang. Dran pa rab tu sel wa nyi thob.
Just by remembering. Will one be thoroughly cleansed.

Don dang rim dang dug gi zir wai. Dui ngai tshog ni nam par pong te.
The suffering from serious affliction by demons, contagious diseases, and poison is left behind.
Sem chan zhan pa nam la yang ngo. Nyi sum dun du ngon par jo na.
Also for others - by means of 7 repetitions in 3 sessions before noon and 3 sessions afternoon.

Bu do pa ni bu thob gyur zhing. Nor do pa ni nor nam nyi thob.
Then if a son is wished for, a son will be obtained, if wealth is required, will be obtained.

Do pa tham cha thob par gyur la. Geg nam me ching so sor jom gyur chig.
All that is wished for will be obtained. Hindrances will be negated and destroyed individually.

Praises to the Twenty-One Tara is a traditional prayer in Tibetan Buddhism to the female Bodhisattva Tara. (Tibetan called Drolma) also known as Arya Tara or Jetsun Dolma. The prayer is found in all four traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.

Each of the twenty-one emanations of Tara has her own name, and a specific mantra with which she is associated, offering protection from various types of fears, harm, and calamities.

Tara has Twenty-One ultimate emanations according to the mantra of the Buddha Samantabhadra called “Twenty-One Praises of Tara”. Twenty-One Tara with 21 specific colors serves with a specific function.

There are different styles and designs of tangka paintings that represent the Twenty-One manifestations of Tara based on distinct lineages and practices, in which forms, colors, ritual objects and even names or functions can vary.
Homage to The No. 21 Taras - Lhamo Ozer Chenma / Marichi
OM TARE TUTTARE TURE MARITSE YE TSE BHRUM NRI DZA SVAHA
Goddess Endowed With Light Who Replenishes the Longevity and Life Force of the Sick

Lhamo Ozer Chenma – Divine Mother of Brilliant Light Rays. The 21st of Atisha’s 21 Taras is peaceful and white in color. This emanation of Tara offers protection from the depletion of energy and vitality by replenishing life force and increasing longevity. She also safeguards the well-being of animals. Golden fish rest upon the utpala flower by her left ear.
Lhamo Ozer Chenma is peaceful and white in color. She radiates light, instantly summoning all evil spirits who steal the vitality and longevity of the sick. Upon her utpala flower is a golden fish. Light radiates from the three syllables OM AH HUNG of her body, speech, and mind, completely pacifying all obstacles: outer forces, inner imbalance of the elements, and secret obstacles of dualistic grasping at afflictive emotions.

Tara Ozer Chenma is the divine great Mother of “brilliant light rays”, Ozer. She is particularly beneficial to us because she can protect our longevity. She helps us when our energy, vitality, or life force is endangered. She is also renowned as a protector of animals.
Om Jetsunma pal ma drolma la chaktsal lo
Om Homage to the noble lady Tara

Chaktsal den yi sum nam ko pe
Homage to you, adorned with three natures

Shi we tu dang yang dak den ma
Perfectly endowed with peaceful strength

Don dang ro lang no jin tsok nam
You destroy demons, zombies, and yakshas

Jom pa tu re rab chok nyi ma
O TURE, most exalted and sublime

Tsa we ngak kyi to pa di dang
I praise with this root mantra

Chak tsal wa ni nyi shu tsa chik
and pay homage twenty one times
Prayer of the Benefits
Whoever is endowed with devotion for the goddess and recites this with supreme faith, remembering it at dawn upon waking and in the evenings, will be granted all fearlessness, will perfectly pacify all negativities, and will eliminate all unfortunate migrations.

The multitudes of conquerors will quickly grant initiation: Thus, endowed with this greatness, one will eventually reach the state of a Buddha. If affected by the most terrible poison, whether ingested, drunk, or from a living being, just by remembering will one be thoroughly cleansed.

If this prayer is recited two, three, or seven times, It will pacify all the sufferings of torments caused by spirits, fevers, and poisons, and by other beings as well. If you wish for a child, you will get a child; if you wish for wealth, you will receive wealth. All your wishes will be fulfilled and all obstacles pacified.

OM TARE TUTTARE TURE AYUR DATE BHRUM SVAHA
Victorious One of Ushnisha Who Accomplishes Immortality

Tsugtor Namgyalma (Ushnishavijaya) is peaceful and golden yellow in color. She emanates from the crown chakra of the Buddha as Prajnaparamita. She is victorious over all non-virtue and afflictive emotions. Upon her utpala flower is a vase of immortality that radiates light in the ten directions.

This light transforms the radiant essence of Samsara and nirvana into nectar that fills her vase. The vase of nectar supported by the utpala flower to her left indicates her ability to increase life force, vitality and longevity by decreasing imbalances and reestablishing equanimity. She also protects beings from scenarios of unfavourable rebirth.

But increase further and further.

Dedication of Merit
By this merit may we obtain omniscience then.
Having defeated the enemies wrong-doings.
May we liberate migratory from the ocean of existence.
With its stormy waves of birth, old age, sickness and death.

The Three Jewels

“He who has gone for refuge to the Buddha, the Teaching and his Order, penetrates with transcendental wisdom the Four Noble Truths — suffering, the cause of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the Noble Eightfold Path leading to the cessation of suffering.  This indeed is the safe refuge, this the refuge supreme. Having gone to such a refuge, one is released from all suffering. ~ Dhammapada 190-192”

The “Three Treasures” of the Buddhist tradition are the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Throughout the Buddhist world, Buddhists have these Three Treasures in common. To be a Buddhist means taking refuge in the Three Treasures.

What do the 3 jewels represent in Buddhism?
The Three Jewels (also called the Triratna) are the three essential supporting components of Buddhism. They guide and give refuge (safety and comfort) to Buddhists.

Buddhists take refuge in three different expressions of awakened mind: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Each of these is a precious and necessary element of the Buddhist path, and so they are called the three jewels.
Buddha: The Teacher
This refers, first, to the historical Buddha, the original teacher. He was not a god but a human being like us, and his example shows us that we too can follow the path to enlightenment. More broadly, the Buddha principle refers to all teachers and enlightened beings who inspire and guide us.
Dharma: The Teachings
The Buddhist Dharma starts with the fundamental truths that the Buddha himself taught—the four noble truths, the three marks of existence, the eightfold path, etc.—and includes the vast body of Buddhist teachings that have been developed in the 2,600 years since then. It’s worth noting that the Sanskrit word Dharma also means a thing or object in the conventional sense. In either case, the word denotes a basic law or truth. of reality.
Sangha: The Community
The term Sangha has traditionally referred to monastics and arhats in whom lay practitioners take refuge. This has changed in the West, where Sangha has come to mean the community of Buddhist practitioners generally, both monastic and lay. Buddhists here also use the word to describe a specific community or group, and you will often hear people talk about “my Sangha,” meaning the Buddhist community to which they belong.

Why is the Buddha Jewel important?
Since Buddha is believed to have been the first man to truly understand wisdom and the way to enlightenment, this jewel also signifies the fulfillment of enlightenment. Therefore, when a Buddhist claims to take refuge in the Buddha, he's also saying that enlightenment, in itself, is his refuge.
This is our Youtube Buddhist channels: The Tibetan Refuge Prayers to the Three Jewels

How do I become Buddhist?
Anyone can become a Buddhist. You will need to in the Three Jewels or Triple Gem (and follow a ceremony during which you take a vow to uphold the Five Precepts (to not kill, not steal, not commit sexual misconduct, refrain from false speech and not take intoxicants that lessen your awareness).
What is the Buddhist refuge prayer?
I take refuge in the Buddha, the incomparably honoured one; I take refuge in the Dharma, honourable for its purity; I take refuge in the Sangha, honourable in its harmonious life.

What taking refuge is not
The idea of taking refuge can create some confusion initially, even misconceptions that run precisely opposite to the deeper meaning of this practice.Taking refuge does not mean handing responsibility over to some higher being. When we take refuge in the Buddha, we don’t think that Siddhartha Gautama is going to swoop in from heaven and solve all of our problems.

In fact, we are taking refuge in our own enlightened potential. This actually means accepting a much higher responsibility, since we recognize what we are capable of becoming and commit to reach nothing short of that. It is a reminder to seek our own greatest possibility. Taking refuge also does not mean that nothing that happens in your life matters, because you only care about the absolute.

On the contrary, when we understand the relationship between the ultimate reality and the conventional world, we realize that everything matters so much more. Finally, taking refuge does not mean we only care about some limited community of spiritual people, as if beings at a lower level of consciousness aren’t worth our attention.

It is actually a gesture towards recognizing a universal Sangha, the capacity of every single being to act as our greatest teacher – if we are only willing to listen to what they have to teach us.
How can taking refuge become a part of my life?
There are many ways to bring into your life this sense of surrender and trust in the ultimate  realiyin the form of the Three Jewels. You can take refuge in the Three Jewels in a formal way as part of a ceremony, where you also commit to following the Five Lay Precepts: no killing, no stealing, no telling lies, no sensuous misconduct and no consuming intoxicants. This ritual, which must be led by a qualified teacher, is actually the way to become a Buddhist “officially.”

In your daily life, you can begin your meditations by invoking the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, feeling reverence and asking for the support of what they represent. And as you go about your life, take refuge in your higher wisdom as much as possible. Remember why you are here, what you are and what you can become.

Practicing Buddhism or meditation is for us to be serene and happy, understanding and loving. This way we work for the peace and happiness of our family and our society. If we look closely, the Three Gems are actually one. The other two gems always exist in each gem. In Buddha, there is Buddhahood, there is the Buddha body. Within, Buddha there is the Dharma body because without the Dharma body, he could not have become a Buddha. In the Buddha there is the Sangha body because he had breakfast with the Bodhi tree, with the other trees, and birds and the environment.

Without you, the Dharma cannot be practiced. It has to be practiced by someone. Without each of you, the Sangha cannot be. That is why when we say, “I take refuge in the Buddha,” we also hear, “The Buddha takes refuge in me.” “I take refuge in the Dharma. The Dharma takes refuge in me. I take refuge in the Sangha. The Sangha takes refuge in me.”
