The Phenomena of The Tibetan Nechong Oracle (1/2)

The word oracle is an ancient Greek word that can be found in the Oxford dictionaries, and the simple definition means "a priest or priestess acting as a medium through whom advice or prophecy was sought from the gods in classical antiquity."

In the Tibetan tradition, the word oracle is used for a spirit that enters those men and women who act as mediums between the natural and spiritual realms. The mediums are, therefore, known as kuten, which literally means "the physical basis."

According to Tibetan tradition, Guru Rinpoche said Padmasambhava was born on a lotus in a Dhanakosha Lake on the tenth day of the monkey (fifth) month in the Year of the Monkey.

When Guru Rinpoche, Padmasambhava, consecrated Samye Monastery with the Vajrakilaya dance, he tamed the local spirit protector, Pehar Gyalp, and bound him by oath to become the head of the entire hierarchy of Buddhist protective spirits. Pehar, later known as Dorje Drakden, became the principal protector of His Holiness The Dalai Lama, manifesting through the Nechung Oracle.

The Communist Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959.
After years of guerrilla war between Tibetan rebels and Chinese soldiers in a land that China considered to be its territory, thousands of protesters surrounded the Dalai Lama’s palace in Lhasa to keep His Holiness from being abducted, arrested, or assassinated.

Over the following days, the State of the Oracle, the Dalai Lama’s advisor, urged him to flee. The Tibetan government-in-exile reports, variously, 87,000 deaths for Tibetans, and this included the monks and nuns during the rebellion.

According to the Dalai Lama, "Tibetans rely on oracles for various reasons. The purpose of the oracles is not just to foretell the future. They are called upon as protectors and sometimes used as healers. However, their primary function is to protect the Buddha Dharma and its practitioners.

Who is the Tibetan Oracle?
The Nechung Oracle, a medium for both prophecies and warnings, has been the protector of Tibet since the eighth century. Today, the Oracles are living in Dharamsala who speaks perfect English. The Nechung Oracle, Thubten Ngodrup, poses with a small companion.
The Venerable Thupten Ngodup, the state oracle of Tibet
Who is the current Nechung Oracle?
The current Nechung Kuten (medium of the chief state oracle), Ven. Thupten Ngodup, was born on July 13, 1958, in Phari, Tibet. He is a descendant of the famous Tibetan Tantric Master Nga-dak Nyang-relwa (1136–1204).

Ngodup was born in Tibet in 1958 and fled to Dharamsala in 1966 after the Chinese took control of his home country. He entered the Nechung Monastery, established in exile there, at the age of 12. The monastery, originally located near the capital of Lhasa in Tibet, has been closely tied to the succession of Dalai Lamas for centuries, as well as to the oracle.
According to the Nechung Foundation website, the monastery has been known as the seat of the State Oracle of Tibet since the 17th century, when the fifth Dalai Lama pronounced the oracle "the chief protector of the Tibetan Government, responsible for peace and harmony on earth."
While at the monastery, Ngodup served as chief ritual assistant to the Nechung oracle and was recognised as his successor when that oracle died.
Who is the female oracle of Tibet?
Her title is Rangjung Neljorma self-arisen dakini. She is also the state oracle of Tsering Chenga, the goddess protector of Tibet. The female Khadro-la, Khadro-la is the State Medium of the Tenma Oracle (The Tenma Goddesses are the Twelve Guardian Deities of Tibetan Buddhism).

What does Khandro mean in Tibetan?
The Tibetan term 'Khandro' literally means 'sky-goer', indicating one who traverses the 'sky' of the expanse of wisdom. The masculine form of the word is Daka, which is usually translated into Tibetan as pawo "hero"
Tibet takes a special position in the world in certain respects: even nowadays the Tibetan Government employs an oracle and it regularly consults him on governmental, political issues as well as on personal matters concerning the Dalai Lama.
The phenomenon of oracles remains an important part of the Tibetan way of life. Tibetans rely on oracles for various reasons. The purpose of the oracles is not just to foretell the future. They are called upon as wisdom protectors and sometimes used as healers. However, their primary function is to protect the Buddha Dharma and its practitioners.

Who is The Victorious White Parasol Goddess - Ushnisha Sitatapatra ?
The name Ushnisha Sitatapatra translates as "The Victorious White Parasol. She is the protector against supernatural phenomena dangers and quelling disasters. Ushnisha Sitatapatra, is her name in Sanskrit, and 'Dug-Kar' is her name in Tibetan.

Her name is composed of 'Sita' (White) and 'atapatra (Parasol or Umbrella). She is known as the White Umbrella Goddess who saves us from all harm. Her parasol symbolizes protection from natural catastrophes, diseases, spirit harm and all forms of misfortune.

Ushnisha Sitatapatra is one of the most complex Vajrayana goddesses. According to the Buddhist text,  Ushnisha Sitatapatra emerged from the Buddha's ushnisha when Buddha was in the heaven.

The Buddha announced her role to "cut asunder completely all malignant demons, to cut asunder all the spells of others, to turn aside all enemies and dangers and hatred." Her benign and beautiful form belies her ferocity as she is a "fierce, terrifying goddess, garlanded by flames, a pulverizer of enemies and demons.

The Victorious White Parasol Goddess - Ushnisha Sitatapatra is one of many powerful female deities. She manifests her power with her thousand heads, arms, and legs. She has eyes on the palms of each of her hands and soles of her feet, and each head has three eyes.

Standing triumphantly within an aureole blazing with the fire of wisdom, the goddess tramples the enemies of spiritual attainment (such as anger, greed and delusion) with her numerous feet. In Ushnisha-Sitatapatra’s primary hands are the white umbrella of protection and the wheel of the Dharma (the Buddha’s teaching). Her other hands brandish various weapons and form a halo around her.

She has one thousand faces, arms and legs; each face has three eyes, and she has one eye in the palm of each hand and the sole of each foot, showing that she watches and protects sentient beings. Her central faces are white (as is her body); her right faces are yellow, the faces at the rear of her body are red, and the left faces green; there is also a "tier" of blue faces at the top of her head.
Her right hands hold wheels of the Dharma (dharmachakra) and her left hands hold arrows; one of her other left hands also holds aloft a white umbrella which also symbolises her protection.

She is venerated in both the Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions. Ushnisha Sitatapatra is a powerful independent Bodhisattva as she was emanated by our Lord Shakyamuni Buddha  from his ushnisha. Whoever practices her mantra will be reborn in Amitābha's pure land as well as gaining protection against supernatural danger and black magic. Ushnisha Sitatapatr is a female counterpart of the thousand-armed form of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva.
Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva is a Sanskrit word, Avalokiteshvara  Bodhisattva is known as the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Ushnisha Sitatapatra has a thousand eyes that watch over living beings, and a thousand arms that protect and assist them.
Ushnisha Sitatapatra, her parasol indicates her ability to protect sentient beings from natural disaster and diseases.

She is white in color, because the principal means by which she accomplishes this function is the enlightenment energy of pacification. By Chanting her mantra invokes extremely powerful protection. Ushnisha Sitatapatra is a powerful independent deity as she was emanated by Shakyamuni Buddha from his Ushnisha. Whoever practices her mantra will be reborn in Amitābha's Dewachen pure land.
Ushnisah Sitatapatra Bodhisattva is one of the most complex Vajrayana goddesses.Ushnisah Sitatapatra she emerged from the Buddha ushnisha when he was in the heaven. The Buddha announced her role to cut asunder completely all malignant demons,to cut asunder all the spells of others and to turn aside all enemies and dangers and hatred. Her benign and beautiful form belies her ferocity as she is a 'fierce terrifying goddess, garlanded by flames, a pulverized of enemies and demons or evils spirits.
Ushnisha Sitatapatra has strong and magic power to influence all living creatures with her noble moral. The white umbrella in her hand is one of the eight pieces of treasures which is said can be used to drive away the monsters and bring peace. It is said that anyone who have received the oral transmission or empowerment , a minimum requirement to complete the recitation of her mantra is 100, 000 times.

What do the demons under Ushnisha Sitatapatra feet and its representation?

Demons in the Buddhist sense are the bad qualities within all living beings that hinder our path to Buddhahood, such as greed, hatred, and pride. Buddhists have compassion for all beings, even the demons, who must be subdued and brought back into the fold.
Every being in the universe will eventually attain enlightenment, including the most evil. For all Buddhists, there is no ultimate evil, only delusions represented by demons, who need to be guided back on the Buddhist path. Representations of demons also assist in the meditation on one’s own inner demons that need subduing. The meditator seeks to become like the deity and subdue these inner demons.
Ushnisha Sitatapatra manifests in many elaborate forms, the most commonly manifestation of having a thousand faces, arms and legs or simply as a feminine deity or goddess of great beauty. She us known foremost for her "White Umbrella or White Parasol". She is most frequently attributed with the golden wheel. The auspiciousness of the turning of the precious wheel is symbolic of the Buddha's doctrine, both in its teachings and realization.

** Footnote
Vajrayana features countless skillful and powerful methods which, if they are practiced in the proper way, can make the process of accumulation and purification incredibly swift and direct.

Please consult your Guru or a qualified lineage master for Vajrayana practice! Should a devotee even want to start studying and contemplating the tantric practice, then it is truly necessary to first have completed the preliminaries and to be certain and sure that bodhicitta has arisen and developed in one’s mind.

It is absolutely necessary to have the pure motivation and to know that Vajrayana practice is not carried out to increase one’s own power and profit.

Heartfelt Message of His Holiness The 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje

His Holiness birth date June 26, 1985.

This year marks my 30th birthday. Time has passed very quickly. This year is also the 15th year since I left Tibet and came to India. This 30th birthday is considered to mark a special milestone, and many people have been requesting me to celebrate this birthday extensively. However, I have decided not to celebrate my birthday for several reasons that I would like to share with you here.
His Holiness was with His Parents in Tibet.

In all these years since leaving Tibet, I have never seen my parents again, and now they have grown old. This body was created and nurtured by my parents, and therefore my birthday is a day in which I feel their absence keenly.

In these 15 years since I arrived in India, I have been living in a temporary residence at Gyuto Monastery in Dharamsala. Even though Gyuto Monastery has been an exceptionally kind and hospitable host, it is unseemly for a guest to cause such unnecessary inconvenience over their birthday year after year.
Furthermore, each year on my birthday, I recall not only my parents, but also the sparkling beauty of the pristine natural environment in which I was born and raised. This intensifies my sense of urgency for the protection of the fragile ecosystems of the Tibetan plateau as well as the Himalayas. As I have said, the area’s glaciers make it the source of most of Asia’s major rivers, and the Third Pole of the globe itself. For this reason, the Tibetan plateau plays an important role in the well-being and sustenance not only of the people who live within it, but of all of Asia and indeed the entire planet. Because the Tibetan culture and way of life has existed in harmony with that environment for thousands of years, I feel its preservation is urgently needed in order to preserve that crucial environment.
This is true not only of the Tibetan plateau, but also of the entire Himalayan region, including the countries of Bhutan and Nepal, and the states of India located within the Himalayas, such as the State of Sikkim. The country of Bhutan presents an excellent example of the value of retaining the way of life that is uniquely suited to the local Himalayan environment, and its commitment to doing so is truly praiseworthy.

I have yet to visit but have heard from my many friends there that Sikkim is a peaceful and environmentally friendly state. The main seat of the Karmapa reincarnation lineage is Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet, and I have had the wonderful opportunity to experience life there. When the 16th Karmapa left Tibet, he built a monastic seat at Rumtek in Sikkim, which is now a part of India.
Meanwhile, many people in Sikkim have a solemn and sacred bond with the 16th Karmapa and now are deeply devoted to me. Many of them have repeatedly requested me to come to visit them and it is my own heartfelt wish to be able to travel to Sikkim in order to meet with them to honor these sacred bonds and to make a pilgrimage to holy places in Sikkim.

Nepal is still recovering from the terrible destruction and loss of life due to the recent earthquakes. I have asked my monasteries and nunneries to offer not only their prayers but also active and practical aid, and I request again now that they continue unflaggingly, as much rebuilding and healing still lies ahead. This tragic earthquake also shows very clearly the value and importance of the natural environment. We must take that as a lesson, and intensify our efforts to preserve and protect our planet, which has been like a kind, life-giving mother who has nurtured us all.

For all these various reasons, I personally will not be celebrating my birthday. I understand that others may still want to mark this day, and I do not wish to prevent anyone else from holding celebrations if they wish to do so.

From my side, I feel that I have accomplished nothing that I consider worthy of so many years of life; and have done nothing but receive a great deal of support and love from many people. I want to take this occasion to thank all of them from the very bottom of my heart.
