Drolma Yuthog – The Powerful Puja of Arya Tara to Repel Adversity

Drolma Yuthog – Puja of Arya Tara to Repel Adversity.
The powerful prayer of Mother Arya Tara to repel negativities that was passed down by Arya Nagarjuna has many merits and benefits. Since the beginning of last year, the COVID-19 has brought about misery throughout the world and ravaged lives and livelihoods of many people.

For an extraordinarily challenging time like this, conducting this Tara Puja will be extremely beneficial and urgently required. However to conduct such puja in our country is not possible as it involves the gathering of many participants. Thus I have asked a team of ten lamas from the Chorten Monastery of Sikkim, who currently reside in Bhutan to perform the puja.

Arya Tara is the embodiment of Buddhas of the Three Times namely past, present and future. Many have espoused the practices, merits, sutra and tantra of Mother Arya Tara. This includes vast teachings about the deity by Sakyamuni Buddha.
Tara manifested from the tears of Noble Avalokitesvara out of great compassion when he saw the unbearable sufferings of sentient beings in Samsara. The two tear drops became Green Tara and White Tara respectively. Usually Buddhahood is attained with a male body, there are hardly any emanations in female form.

However, Tara is a unique exception. This is due to her vow to liberate all sentient beings until the exhaustion of Samsara in a female form. This Sadhana is revealed by Nagarjuna after he achieved siddhis from his practice of his ishtadevata Arya Tara and was then passed down through generations of masters from India to Tibet.

In Tibet, the Sadhana was first introduced by Atisha who gave the transmission to one of his main disciples Dromtonpa and since then, the practice has flourished in Tibet until now. This Tara Sadhana from Nargajuna not only is able to repel all harms and obstacles inflicted by haughty demons and vile spirits, it is like a wish fulfilling jewel cintamaniraja on the hood of Naga King Tsugna Rinzin which can fulfill all mundane and supramundane wishes.
If someone relies on evil spirits or demons to cast curses and black magic on us, or tries to exert control on us through subjugation practices or when ominous circumstances arise within a community, all this can be repelled by this Tara puja.

It is also a sublime and profound personal practice to attain spiritual achievements (Skt. Siddhis). When we travel on long journeys for important tasks, this practice can eliminate all outer and inner obstacles. When geopolitical conflicts and epidemics arise, they can also be easily quelled.

Therefore, practising this Tara Sadhana with faith and devotion can help one achieve all worldly and supramundane aims.  Other benefits include the repelling of curses by mantrins, ominous dreams, harms caused by astral bodies, harms from obstructing spirits, deaths of livestock, harms from demons, etc. In a nutshell, all undesirable and negative circumstances can be resolved with this powerful practice.
As Buddha taught us :“ From the causes created by this human body, one can achieve the fruition of enlightenment.” Although the power and blessing of compassion from all Buddhas benefitting sentient beings are non-dual.

In this current age of Kali yuga, the blessing of Tara is the most powerful along with another four ishtadevatas namely, Avalokiteshvara, Vajrapani, Manjushri and Padmasambhava. Arya Tara is the swiftest among the five.

For those who have received the empowerment of Arya Tara and oral transmission of the Praises to the Twenty One Taras, depending on one's generation of bodhicitta with the right altruistic intent, prepare outer and inner offerings in accordance to the tantra and maintain pure perception and purity of mind throughout the Sadhana will help one definitely accumulate immeasurable merits.
Meditating upon Tara and the merit field, one can swiftly perfect the accumulation of merit and wisdom, and dispel both the cognitive and afflictive obstacles.

When is the favourable and unfavourable days for hair cutting in the Tibetan lunar calendar ?

What is the favourable and unfavourable days for hair cutting in the Tibetan lunar calendar? Cutting one's hair on these days will lead to a loss of vitality.

Tibetan calendar is based on the Moon phases and it is not possible to transfer it directly into Gregorian system, because due to precise calculation every year, certain days are omitted (e.g. after the third lunar day, the fifth one follows), or doubled (e.g. there are two forth days, one after another).
Consequently, the tenth day after the new moon (calculated according to western calendar), for instance, doesn't always correspond to the tenth day of the lunar calendar; it may be the eighth or the eleventh day – depending on omitted or doubled day before.

Below, there are dates of favourable and unfavourable days for hair cutting. The dates were taken from the calendar by Tibetan astrologists, including changes (omitted or doubled days) mentioned above.
Favourable days of the lunar month for cutting the hair are:

Tibetan & Chinese New YearCelebration - Year of The Earth Dog 2018.

February 16,2018. The Tibetan Losar Festival is likewise a Chinese New Year celebration. In ancient times when the peach tree would blossom, it was viewed as the beginning of another year. Since the systematization of the Tibetan calendar in 1027 A.D. the first day of the principal month is settled toward the start of the New Year.

On New Year’s Day, families join together and ‘auspicious dipper’ is offered, and the words ‘Tashi Delek’ are used for individuals to welcome each other. This day is an event when Tibetan families rejoin to expect fortune in the coming New Year and is known as Losar.

The Losar celebration begins from the first to the third of the principal Tibetan month. Entryways are painted with religious images, making tribute to family, places of worship. On New Year’s Eve, Tibetans eats grain crumbed sustenance with their families. After dinner, it is the time of the Festival of Banishing Evil Sprits!

Lights are lit and people run and shout to free of evil spirits in their homes. Prior to the beginning of the New Year’s Day, housewives get their first bucket of water to get breakfast ready. After dressing up, people open their entryways and go to religious communities.

On the third day, the prayer flag, which was hung up the prior year will be supplanted with another one. Other activities will be held amid the occasions.

* The Tibetan and The Chinese Astrology

[ *Footnote - Tibetan & Chinese tradition customs and has nothing associated with Vajrayana Buddhism ]

People born in the Years of the Dog:

1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018.

If you're born in a Dog year, and the following is deemed lucky for you:

•Lucky numbers: 3, 4, 9
•Lucky colors: red, green, and purple
•Lucky flowers: rose, cymbidium orchids

As per both the Tibetan and Chinese Astrology of the Dog, the eleventh indication of the Tibetan and Chinese zodiac is thoughtful, sympathetic and intelligent.

A person conceived in the Year of the Dog has a twofold way to deal with life and his associations with others. If you benefit from his companionship or his love, a Dog will never disillusion you.

Featuring - The Tibetan Mastiffs

Tibetan Mastiffs are – you got it – massive! They average about 25 inches tall at the shoulder, and on rear legs stand nearly as tall as people. A solid weight range for Tibetan Mastiffs lies between 85-140 pounds, and their sumptuous thick hide just adds to their size. This breed looks more like a lion than a canine; and in all honesty, demonstrations more like a lion or bear than a dog as well.

The Lion canines

Like bears or the lions, the Tibetan Mastiff’s demeanor is frequently depicted as standoffish. He cherishes his personal space and is profoundly defensive of his den. He’s a guard dog, above all else, and will frequently go off individually to patrol. He has his own schedule and doesn’t appreciate being instructed. As a result, these majestic canines require firm handlers.

With enough practice, and forbearance, Tibetan Mastiffs will work with their masters to come to a compromise. At the point When your Mastiff at last becomes your companion, he’ll be your defender or safeguard for life.

Ancient War Dogs

Tibetan Mastiffs have a long, storied history. Their precursors accompanied the Persians amid the rule of their empire. They vanquished landmasses by the Romans and the Huns, and antiquarians speculate Tibetan Mastiff forerunners were praised as war dogs to the point when they settled in Tibetan valleys.

In the wake of remaining detached for a considerable length of time, they became more domesticated. This shouldn't imply that they were lap puppies! In actuality, these dogs remained in homes amid the day and roamed free during the evening for the village’s protection. After some time, they became trusted and revered by villagers throughout Tibet and the Himalayas.

Twofold Layer Coats

Tibetan Mastiffs have a generally high maintenance coats. They are thick, with twofold layers, for surviving frigid climates. Some Tibetan Mastiffs have significantly thicker hair close to their neck that resembles like a lion’s mane!

They should be brushed a couple each week to control shedding and washed when required. Furthermore, their regular shedding, sometimes called “molting”, is so immense to the point that you may need to take them to a groomer.

Tibetan Mastiffs are fierce companions that guard and secure with all that they have. Try not to give their independent nature a chance to trick you – they are the most content when close by their families.

What Changed Tibet Today

What Changed Tibet Today
A journey to a mysterious Himalaya snow land and its unique Vajrayana Buddhism and the threatening culture. Tibetan culture and identity is inseparably linked to Tibetan Buddhism.

October 1950 nearly 70 years after the invasion of China, the Chinese government has changed the iron hand, at least in public, with the silk gloves of the economical modernization. The carrot has replaced the bat, as the development could end with the Tibetans accepting the facts valid since 1951.
The autonomous province, with estimated 3-4 million Tibetans and about four times bigger than France, has changed in the last 15 years. The mighty Potala palace, winter residence of His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama since the 17th century, has remained approximately unchanged. But Lhasa has changed.

These days, large parts of the city of Lhasa has changed rapidly and increasingly like any modern Chinese city, with hundreds of old buildings and villages knocked down to make way for new shopping malls and apartments for immigrants.

Nowadays, the Tibetans have to adjust and adapt to a new flood of arrivals of domestic and foreign tourists, after China opened a new train route across the high altitude Tibetan Plateau, from  Xining to Lhasa in 2006.
Tibet today

Tourists flying high to ‘the roof of the world'
The Tibet region’s airports received 3.15m visitors last year and the number of tourists has grown by as much as 30 per cent each year

Tibet is rich in tradition and  Tibetans lifestyles that have changed over the generations. It is also a modern country with many urban Tibetans living busy city lives. Communications are very important for Tibetans and the use of mobile phones and the internet is extensive, including in some of the most remote parts of Tibet.
Lhasa, the capital of southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, is one of 24 famous historical and cultural cities declared by the China State Council. In recent years, Tibet's tourism has expanded rapidly, especially after the completion of Qingzang Railway.

Tourism is the new engine power tool for development in Tibet. Tibet received more than 20 million tourists for the first time in 2015, representing 190-per cent growth from five years ago. Tourism revenue reached 28.19 billion yuan (£3.42 billion) in the same year, equal to 27.5 percent of Tibet's GDP.

By 2020, estimated there will be 240 million tourists coming to Lhasa, generating 29.8 billion yuan in tourism revenue. Besides, Lhasa will become the only one International tourist, cultural city of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
Statistics from Lhasa's tourism Bureau
  1. In 2006 -2007 Tibet received 7 million tourists, including 1 million foreigners. Tibet has generated a tourism income of 2.29 billion Chinese yuan.
  2. In 2010, Tibet received 6.85 million tourists from home and abroad, generating revenues of 7.14 billion yuan, 14 percent of its total GDP.
  3. In 2011 -2012 Tibet received 19 million domestic and foreign tourists.
  4. In 2015 Tibet received more than 20 million domestic and foreign tourists.
  5. In first half of 2016 Tibet received a record of 6.8 million tourists domestic and foreign tourists. Tourism revenue during the period increased by 32.1 percent year on year to 7 billion yuan ($1.05 billion), according to a statement issued by the regional tourism development commission.
By 2020, there will be 240 million tourists coming to Lhasa, generating 29.8 billion yuan in tourism revenue. Besides, Lhasa will become the only one International tourist, cultural city of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
China's One Belt One Road Initiative (BRI)
Navigating a world of new opportunities through China's One Belt One Road Initiative (BRI)
Bridging the 'infrastructure gap' in Asia and beyond. The Belt and Road Initiative is expected to bridge the infrastructure gap and thus accelerate and infrastructure-driven economic growth across the Asia Pacific area and Central and Eastern Europe.

What is Tibet and China’s 'one belt and one road initiative?
In more recent times, China’s “One Belt, One Road” (OBOR) policy – China plan to expand the reach of Chinese trade routes to Europe through a land route in Central Asia and a sea route through the Indian Ocean and around the horn of Africa – has taken center stage as a cornerstone of modern Chinese foreign policy. Access to Pakistan and Central Asia are crucial to ensure the success of these trade routes, which incidentally must start or pass through Tibet.

China’s railway expansion in Tibet. China announced plans to extend a railway line linking Tibet with the rest of the country to the borders of India, Nepal and Bhutan by 2020. China opened its 1,142 km railway line from Golmud in its Qinghai province to Tibet’s capital Lhasa in 2006.
The 253 km Lhasa-Shigatse link, which includes 13 stations with altitudes ranging from 3,600 to 4,000 metres, is the largest investment project in the Tibet Autonomous Region in the 12th Five-Year Plan.

The Economist in June this year, published a report about over 7.5 million passengers rode the railway from Golmud to Lhasa in 2013 alone — more than the entire population of Tibet itself.  China will spend about $17.6 billion for a second rail link to northwestern Xinjiang, Uighur, its major coal production region near Tibet.

The Myth and Mystery of The Tibetan Dzi Beads

To the Tibetans and other Himalayan people, the Tibetan Dzi bead is well known by its myth and mystery of its natural energy. The Tibetan Dzi bead is a "precious jewel of supernatural origin" with great power to protect its wearer from disaster.

The Dzi beads are perhaps one of the most powerful, expensive, and sought after of all talismans. Dzi beads have been known to sell for as much as several million dollars. For many Tibetans, the Dzi are sacred heirlooms; the beads will often be passed from generation to generation.
The Tibetan people believe Dzi beads are spiritual stones fallen from Heaven, which bring good karma to those who own them. The ancient Dzi absorbs cosmic energy from the universe. Tibetans generally believe that Dzi beads are of divine origin and therefore not created by human hands. Some say they were dropped by the Heavenly beings to benefit those who have the good fortune to find them.

Since they are believed to have a divine source, they are considered to be a very precious and powerful amulet. Beads can often be seen in Tibetan temples adorns the most revered statues and sacred relics.  They are thought to bring good fortune, ward off evil, and protect the wearer from physical harm and illness. It has even been claimed by Tibetan refugees,

The meaning of the  Tibetan word "Dzi" literally means to "shine, brightness, clearness, splendor". The beads originate in the Tibetan cultural sphere and can command high prices and are difficult to come by.
It’s said to possess mysterious powers and bring good fortune to the wearer. Ancient and pure dZi beads of Tibet are extremely precious and rare. No matter how many or how few eyes, they bear, all dZi beads possess the mystic power of bringing luck, warding off evil, stabilizing blood pressure, guarding against apoplexy and enhancing body strength.

Owners and wearers of these beads are blessed with unexpected credit, luck and perfection They are found primarily in Tibet, but also in neighboring Bhutan, Ladakh and Sikkim. Shepherds and farmers pick them up in the grasslands or while cultivating fields. Because Dzi are found in the earth, Tibetans cannot conceive of them as man-made.
Since knowledge of the bead is derived from oral traditions, few beads have provoked more controversy concerning their source, method of manufacture and even more precise definition. This all contributes to making them the most sought after and collectable beads on earth. The most prized pure Dzi, are generally beads with eyes or unusual decorations.

A pure Dzi may or may not have eyes. It can be opaque or partially translucent (In Tibet, translucent beads are usually valued lower). The most sought after base color is an opaque dark brown to black.
Legend has it, about three to four thousand years ago, a meteor traveled from the distant planet crashed into the Himalayas. This led to the 14 different types of meteorological elements in Dzi beads, with the element ytterbium possessing the strong magnetic field. This is what gave rise to the mystical power of Dzi beads. Wearing Dzi beads in the long run can enhance our blood circulation and metabolism. It also improves our quality of sleep, revitalizes our body and balances foreign magnetic fields which may be harmful to us.
