The Unsolved Mysteries in Tibet

In this post, we’ll introduce the top 9 Tibet’s unsolved mysteries for you, including Tibetan yeti stories, red snow in Himalaya, rainbow body phenomenon, Mount Everest flag cloud, Zhang Zhung culture, King Gesar storyteller, Guge Kingdom, gterma mystery, Shambhala and shaman of Tibet.
Tibetan Yeti or the abominable snowman of Tibet
As one of the world’s greatest unsolved mysteries, the abominable snowman of the Himalayas (Tibetan Yeti) has been always a hot topic among adventurers and explorers to tour Tibet. As early as 1784, the Tibetan abominable snowman has been mentioned in the written records for the first time.
It’s reported that several people in the Himalayan region have witnessed Tibetan Yeti walking around and robbing local men for marriage. In recent years, some expedition groups have gone to eastern Tibet for further investigation, but whether the abominable snowman really exists is still a mystery.
Himalayas red snow
The surface of the Himalayas is often decorated with blood red spots. Seeing from a long distance, you would think it as red snow. Those red spots are made up of various algae, such as Chlamydomonas nivalis, Chlorococcum infusionum, Ankistrodesmus and so on. Widely distributed in the permanent ice and snow, the plateau algae have a strong cold resistance, making them alive even at -36℃. And due to red pigment in their bodies, they seem to be blood-like.
Mysteries of the Rainbow body
In Tibet and Central Asia, the Buddhist rainbow body tradition goes back to the 8th century, beginning with the great master Padmasambhava, but 20th and 21st-century documentation shows that this is no myth or legend — practitioners, from the highest lamas to the most humble lay people, have attained rainbow body.

Rainbow body is a mysterious phenomenon in Tibetan monasteries. It’s believed that only the senior Lamas who have made great achievements would pass away into a rainbow and enter the boundless palace at their parinirvana.
Mysterious Flag Cloud over Mount Everest
When it’s sunny, you can see a milky banner-shaped cloud floating on the top of mount Everest. That is called as mount Everest flag cloud, forming by convective clouds. Based on its location and height, we can deduce the wind force of Mt. Everest summit. If the flag cloud flutters upwards, the wind is much lighter, and vice versa. Thus, it gains the reputation as the world’s highest vane.
The Epic of King Gesar, a Legendary Tibetan Hero King Gesar is a heroic epic created by the Tibetans from a collection of ancient legends, myths, verses, proverbs and various other folk cultures of Tibet. Originating via folk oral traditions, history of King Gesar was passed down from generation to generation orally in a combination of song and narration for over 1,000 years. Meanwhile, kinds of legends about King Gesar storyteller also came out.

Among numerous narrators, the ones who are able to tell more than one version of King Gesar epic boast themselves as divine artists. That’s to say, the story of King Gesar they told is bestowed by the Gods. Some illiterate Tibetan teenagers, especially in Kham Area can unexpectedly narrate for King Gesar of ling with millions of words after illness or a dream. Till now, no one can explain this mystery.
Terma Tradition - This tradition of mystical discovery is known in Tibetan
Terma texts contain Buddhist teachings intended for troubled times as a source of renewed wisdom and blessings. Although there are antecedents in Indian Buddhism–most famously Nagarjuna’s discovery of the Prajnaparamita literature–terma is primarily a Tibetan phenomena.

The Tibetan word, terma, literally means “treasure” and refers to Buddhist (or Bon) scriptures and relics retrieved from the distant past through a process of revelation. There are two principal types of treasures: earth terma, discovered in the Tibetan and Himalayan landscape, and mind terma, discovered in the mind of the terton or “treasure revealer.” The latter should be distinguished with pure visions, or daknang, which appear in the mind of realized masters.
As Buddhist teachings, terma are most frequently traced to the eighth-century tantric master Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche (literally “precious teacher”). According to treasure lore, during each of the tantric initiations he conducted, Padmasambhava appointed one of his disciples to reveal the associated set of teachings in a future lifetime. Afterwards, his principal disciple and consort, Yeshe Tsogyal, transcribed and hid these teachings throughout the Tibetan and Himalayan landscape.
Shambhala or Shangri-La is the mythological world
Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise, particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia – an enduringly happy land, isolated from the world. In the novel, the people who live at Shangri-La are almost immortal, living hundreds of years beyond the normal lifespan and only very slowly aging.
The mysteries of Tibetan Shamans
Tracing back to Tibetan primitive religion, Tibetan ancestors held that deities existed everywhere, like in the heaven, under the earth, in the waters, and all the living beings in the world are subject to those deities. With the development of human society, people had a fantasy of controlling the objective things and natural phenomena.

The violent treatment of shamans by the Buddhist lama has a long history of Tibet and neighboring Mongolia. At one point, shamans were burned at the stake. However, in the mountainous Himalayan terrain, especially in the difficult to reach areas geographically distant from the Buddhist monastic urban centers, shamans were respected and their work revered.

A Short Prayer to the Dharma Protectors for Offering and Auspiciousne

Mahakala is one of the most popular guardians in the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon. Here he tramples a corpse while wielding a flaying knife and a blood-filled skull cup, signifying the destruction of impediments to enlightenment.

What is the purpose of Mahakala?
His purpose is to help in overcoming negative obstacles on the path to enlightenment, and protecting that path of righteousness (also known as “Dharma”) from hindrances. Like a gargoyle, the mask of Mahakala is also meant to scare the bad spirits and energy away from the place it protects

A Short Prayer to the Dharma Protectors for Offering and Auspiciousness

* Offering prayers
Ngon tse orgyen chenpo chen nga ru
I offer to all the Dharma protectors who long ago

Cho zhin drupar jepe gangzak la
Promised, in the presence of the Great Uddiyana,

Ma yi bu zhin kyongwar zhel zhepe
To protect, like a mother protects her child,

Chokyong sungma nam la chopa bul
Those who practice in accordance with the Dharma.
*Prayer for Auspiciousness
Ngon tse orgyen chenpo chen nga ru
May there be the auspiciousness of all the Dharma protectors who long ago,

Cho zhin drupar jepe gangzak la
Promised, in the presence of the Great Uddiyana,

Ma yi bu zhin kyongwar zhel zhepe
To protect, like a mother protects her child,

Chokyong sungma nam kyi trashi shok
Those who practice in accordance with the Dharma.

Buddha Akshobhya - Long Mantra Prayers And Blessings

*Buddha Akshobhya - Long Mantra*

Namo Ratna Trayaya
Om Kamkani Kamkani
Rochani Rochani
Trotrani Trotrani
Trasani Trasani
Pratihana Pratihana
Sarva Karma Paramparani me Svaha

Akshobhya (Immovable One) is one of the five Dhyani Buddhas, along with Ratnasambhava, Vairocana, Amitabha, and Amoghasiddhi.

He originates from the blue seed mantra “Hum” and when He became a Buddha and reached enlightenment, Akshobhya was given charge over the eastern paradise, called The Ultimate Joy (Pure Land Abhirati).

His consort is Lochana (Lochana is said to be similar in nature to Lord Vairochana) and He is normally accompanied by two elephants.
Akshobhya Buddha is mentioned in a few Mahayana sutras, but mostly He is known from the Vimalakirti Nirdesa (the sutra that teaches the meaning of Nondualism).

The Buddha Akshobhya established with the enlightened intention that all sentient beings could purify any degree of non virtue. Even the extreme non virtue of hatred, violence, and killing can be cleansed through relying on him as the focus of meditation, acknowledging and abandoning non virtuous actions, and invoking his blessings of purification.
In the Akshobhya sutra, the Buddha Sakyamuni himself extolled the perseverance of Akshobhya in actualizing this intention so powerfully that countless beings have been saved from the intense suffering of the lower states of existence.

Akshobhya meditation can liberate, not only the practitioner him or herself from the fear of inauspicious rebirth, but other beings as well. Akshobhya explicitly promised that the merit generated by reciting one-hundred-thousand of his long Dhayani mantra and creating an image of him could be dedicated to another person,  even someone long deceased, and they would be assured of release from lower states of existence and rebirth in spiritually fortunate circumstances.
Recognizing the superb opportunity of their own connection with Akshobhya, hundreds of people have either performed this practice themselves or sponsored it, dedicating the merit to others for whom they felt compassionate concern.

Only an omniscient wisdom being can fully discern an individual's past actions and their outflows in present experience, but the Buddhist teachings indicate that death during the passage toward birth (by miscarriage or abortion), death before adulthood, violent or fearful death, and suicide are signs that the deceased might have difficulties in obtaining fortunate, spiritually well-endowed rebirth. Such beings could benefit from the merit of a hundred thousand Akshobhya recitations and the creation of an Akshobhya image.

What is Chod practice? Attributed to the great Tibetan Yogini Machig Labdron

What is Chod practice?
The chod practitioner seeks to tap the power of fear through activities such as rituals set in graveyards, and visualisation of offering their bodies in a tantric feast in order to put their understanding of emptiness to the ultimate test.

The Tibetan word “Chod” means “to cut off” or “to slay.” The traditional practice of chod cuts off self-cherishing and grasping at a truly existent “I.” It creates the conditions under which one can develop the mind of conventional bodhichitta, which holds others as more dear than oneself, and the mind of ultimate bodhichitta, which sees reality as it truly is.

Attributed to the great Tibetan Yogini Machig Labdron, and the only practice that made its way back to India from Tibet, it is an extremely effective and quick Tantric method for attaining realizations of the path to enlightenment.
Chod is a spiritual practice found primarily in the Yundrung Bön tradition as well as in the Nyingma and Kagyu schools of Tibetan Buddhism (where it is classed as Anuttarayoga Tantra).

It's also known as "cutting through the ego, the practices are based on the Prajnaparamita or "Perfection of Wisdom" sutras, which expound the "emptiness" concept of Buddhist philosophy.

According to Mahayana Buddhists, emptiness is the ultimate wisdom of understanding that all things lack inherent existence. Chod combines Prajnaparamita philosophy with specific meditation methods and Tantric ritual. The chod practitioner seeks to tap the power of fear through activities such as rituals set in graveyards, and visualisation of offering their bodies in a Tantric feast in order to put their understanding of emptiness to the ultimate test.
Key elements
Chod literally mean "cutting through". It cuts through hindrances and obscurations, sometimes called 'demons' or 'gods'. Examples of demons are ignorant, anger and, in particular, the dualism of perceiving the self as inherently meaningful, contrary to the Buddhist doctrine of anatta (non-self).

This is done in a powerful meditative ritual which includes "a stunning array of visualizations, song, music, and prayer, it engages every aspect of one’s being and effects a powerful transformation of the interior landscape.

According to Machig Labdron, the main goal of chod is cutting through ego clinging:

What we call devils are not materially existing individuals . A devil means anything which hinders us in our achievement of liberation. Consequently, even kind and loving friends and companions may become devils as far as liberation is concerned.
In particular, there is no greater devil than this present ego-clinging, and because of this all the devils will rear their ugly heads as long as one has not severed this clinging to ego.

When somebody tells you something that really hurts your mind, that is the most beneficial thing for your mind because it goes straight in your heart and touches your ego.

This is what shows you, like a mirror, like a teaching from the Buddha, one’s own mistaken thoughts, especially the ego; it shows that there is ego, and because there is ego, it hurts.

If there is no ego, then it would never hurt. When people say what your mistakes are, or say words which hurt you, that is the real Chöd practice. This is what makes you see your “I,” the emotional “I” – in Western psychological terms – the object of ignorance, the root of Samsara, which is holding this “I” as truly existent.
Normally one is not aware of this, but by doing the practice of Chöd, inviting the spirits, they create violence and it makes you see the “I,” the object of ignorance, the object to be refuted – the truly existent “I” – clearly. They show the “I” to you very clearly and then you are able to recognize that it is false, an object of ignorance; you are able to use your reasoning, logical reasoning, that the “I” doesn’t exist because it is a dependant arising, or merely imputed.

It is merely imputed relating to the aggregates, the base, etc. There are so many other reasonings you can use. You recognize the object to be refuted at that minute. That it is what doesn’t exist at all; it is totally non-existent.

Chod, like all Tantric systems, has outer, inner and secret aspects. They are described in an evocation sung to Nyama Paldabum by Milarepa:

What we call devils are not materially existing individuals.
