Garuda - The Mysterious Kings Of the Skies

The legend of King Garuda in ancient Tibet, The King Garuda was a mountain deity of Rebkong, Tibet, an area on the west of the river in Amdo province. Their wingspan is said to be many miles wide; when they flap their wings, they cause hurricane-force winds that brings great destruction to mankinds. After he was subjugated by Guru Rinpoche, Padmasambhava and became a worldly protector.

Garuda is the Sanskrit name and in Tibetan word it known as 'khyung' Garuda is a mythical bird-like creature symbolizing various elements of the Buddhist path. Garudas are usually represented with a snake in their beak and hands, symbolizing the protection from ophidians and the subjugation of nagas [serpents]. The garuda is a mythical semi-divine bird-like creature that is the enemy of the nagas.
Garuda is the king of bird and creature of Buddhist mythology. Its Name derives from the root Gri, to swallow: Garuda devours the snakes and is the natural enemy of snakes and he devours or controls them. He is represented with a human upper Body, big Eyes, beak, short blue horns, yellow Hair standing on end, bird's claws and wings.
The Dhyani Buddha Amoghasiddhi sometimes is pictured riding a Garuda. In the Tibetan tradition, the garudas which are important deities of the Bön pantheon, and practised during healing rituals in order to counter certain illnesses provoked by nagas.

There are five different forms and colors of the Garuda which representing aspects of wisdom and characteristic of the five Buddhas activities:-
1) Red Garuda represent fire elements.
2) Yellow Garuda represents earth elements.
3) Black Garuda represents air elements.
4) White Garude represents water elements.
5) Blue or rainbow Garuda represents space elements.
Garuda is an important deity of protection. Garuda symbolizes the space element and the Power of the sun, which can dry up the waters. Therefore he is the natural enemy of snakes and he devours or controls them. He represents the Spiritual energy of which devours the delusions of jealousy. And hatred, which are represented by the snake.

Garuda is also the openness: he can stretch out his wings and soar into space. He represents the great freedom of the mind which can open and is not up tied by conflicting emotions the wise mind which reaches every where, like the rays of the sun, and brings about the growth of life and wisdom.
Specifically in Buddhism Garuda is related of the perfection of giving dana paramita (The first practice of virtue-Bestowing Joyfulness) just as the rays of the sun give life to the earth.

The Buddha And The Dragon

Many Buddha statues are seen where the Buddha is depicted in meditation pose sheltered by a serpent with  a single headed or multi-headed king cobra. The serpents are said to have raised their hoods to shelter and to protect the Buddha during his meditation.  The great Serpent of mythology is often depicted as half human, half snake.  It may also take the form of a many-headed cobra like the one thought to have sheltered the Buddha Shakyamuni and Nagajuna Bodhisattva.
In Buddhism, According to one legend, when the Buddha recognized a naga that appeared as a snake, he had such compassion that he gave the creature the Five Precepts so the naga could return in the next life as a human who could become a monk.  Born into the animal realms, they can also appear as complete serpents or fully human. Dragons can be dangerous, protective or generous with human beings, and can even be potential Buddhas.Tibetan Buddhists believe some nagas are demonic, while others are semi-divine beings who guard material and spiritual treasures, such as sacred texts.
Naga the word come from Sanskrit. Naga or dragon is the word for snake or serpent, in most of the languages of India, Naga referred to the king Cobra,  In the Tibetan and Hindu mythology, Nagas or dragons are primarily serpent-beings. The dragon is a deity of the primal ocean and of mountain springs; also spirits of earth and the realm beneath it, and finally, dragons.

The Nagas are spirits of the underworld, to be found at points where their realm impinges on ours - such as springs and rivers. They store great treasures of wealth and precious stones, and sometimes books of secret teachings in underwater palaces. Like other wealthy beings, these powerful Nagas were formerly people very generous in temperament however, they are dangerous and volatile and also easily get angry and cruel. Their deadly enemy is the Garuda, strongest of the birds."
In Tibet, and the Nagas are known as "klu" and the Dragon play a role in the symbolism of Tibetan Buddhism and in Tibetan mythology, Benign Nagas can be the most generous of allies, but their fierce counterparts are known to cause certain classes of disease. In Tibet they are propitiated as lords of the rain.

A famous legendary of Naga in Tibet
The tradition of Sera Monastery holds that when Sakya Yeshe was on his way back from visiting China, it so happened that the set of Tengyur (Buddhist scriptures) donated by the emperor fell into the water while the party was fording a river. The travellers could see that the texts were hopelessly lost and so, distraught, they continued on their way back to Sera Monastery.

When the caravan finally got back, the monks told them that just before their return, an old man with attendants had visited Sera and presented a set of scriptures to the monastery.  He said that he was delivering it for Sakya Yeshe.  It was believed that the old man was really a Naga king, for when the texts were examined, it was found that they were still a bit damp.
An explanation of the Dragon by H.E Tsewang Ngodrup Rinpoche.
Nagas [klu] are a class of beings that dwell in a variety of locations ranging from waterways and underground locations and also in unseen realms. These beings have their own perceptions and vary in their enlightened level as do humans and other beings.

Nagas are susceptible to suffering created by mankind's carelessness and basic ignorance of proper conduct in nature and disrespectful actions in relation to our environment. Therefore Nagas often retaliate towards humans when they behave in such ignorant manners. The expression of the Nagas' discontent and agitation can be felt as skin diseases, various calamities and so forth.
Additionally, Nagas can bestow various types of wealth, assure fertility of crops and the environment as well as decline these blessings. For this reason the practice of "Lu Sang".
[ Lu Sang - literally means smoke puja ] has been developed or arises as a natural method to increase prosperity, and assist the Nagas by preserving the positive qualities of their natural environment.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the dragon pujas serve with many purposes. Buddhists appease dragon that threaten mankind with diseases by holding rituals and making offerings that appeal to the Dragon sensibilities so that the dragons do not threaten and cause harm to them.

* Footnote *
The Tibetan is only giving offerings to appease to the dragons not to harm them, but the Tibetan Buddhist doesn't take refuge from these worldly beings. As a Buddhist and regardless of what traditions, we only take refuge to the Three Jewels - Buddha, Dharma, Sangha.

The Healing Lapis Lazuli Medicine Buddha And Bodhisattvas.

TADYATA OM BHEKHANDZYE BHEKHANDZYE MAHA BHEKHANDZYE RADZA SAMUDGATE SOHA
Medicine Buddha (Sangye Menla in Tibetan) the manifestation of the healing energy of all Buddhas. He wears monastic robes and sits on a lion throne. The color of his body is dark blue and his left hand holds a bowl filled with nectar and another hand holds a stem of Arura. Medicine Buddha and His pure land is known as the "Eastern Lapis Lazuli Light" and He is flanked by the two chief Bodhisattvas of that pure land and the Bodhisattvas names are as follows:-
1] The Solar Radiance of Suryaprabha Bodhisattva - His celestial's physical manifestation is red and his right hand holds the sun wheel while the left hand holds a red flower. At the time of death, when a dying person invokes the Buddha in earnestness, this Bodhisattvas appear and help the dying person obtain birth on a lotus flower in Eastern Lapis Lazuli Light pure land.
2] The Lunar Radiance of Candraprabha Bodhisattva - His celestial's physical manifestation is white. He sits on a swan and holds the moon wheel in his hand.
At the time of death, when a dying person invokes the Buddha in earnestness, this Bodhisattvas appear and help the dying person obtain birth on a lotus flower in Eastern Lapis Lazuli Light pure land
Buddha Shakyamuni gave the Medicine Buddha teachings at the perfect moment and at the perfect place – Vaishali, India. Buddha Shakyamuni presented the teaching that would be preserved as the Sutra of the Medicine Buddha. This teaching became very prominent in India and came to Tibet in the eighth century.

Shakyamuni describes the Medicine Buddha as an enlightened being who has special powers of healing. The special healing blessings of Medicine Buddha may be obtained by reciting his name or mantra. For centuries, Buddhists have been reciting this mantra prayer, to bring an ultimate healing of spiritual disease, as well as cures for everyday problems of the body and mind.
The Medicine Buddha is one of the most honored figures in the Buddhist pantheon. The sutras in which he appears compared his eastern pure land with the western paradise of Amitabha, and rebirth there is said to be as conducive to enlightenment as is rebirth in Sukhavati.

Recitation of his mantra, or even the mere repetition of his holy name, is said to be sufficient to grant release from the lower realms, protection from worldly dangers and freedom from untimely death. In one of the main sutras concerning the Medicine Buddha, Shakyamuni tells his closest disciple and attendant Ananda: -
"If these sentient beings , those plunged into the depths of Samsara's sufferings hearing the name of the Lord Master of Healing Medicine Buddha, the Lapis Lazuli Radiance Tathagatha, and with utmost sincerity accept it and hold onto it, and no doubts arise, then they will not fall into an awesome path."
According to Buddha Shakyamuni’s teachings, there are seven other emanations of the Medicine Buddha, each with his own color and pure land. Sangye Menla, the Medicine Buddha is blue and dwells in pleasing upon seeing. These various Medicine Buddha emanations are of various colors, such as gold, yellow, pink, red, and blue.

By reciting his holy mantra it is a very powerful method and increasing healing powers for oneself and others, but also for overcoming the inner sickness of attachment, hatred, ignorance and the purification of negative physical and mental karma. Thus to meditate on the Medicine Buddha can help decrease physical and mental illness and suffering.

If we can recite Medicine Buddha mantra every day and is good to do at least 5 malas, this will purify negative karma and will help you never to be reborn in the lower realms. According to Medicine Buddha sutra that even if an animal hears the Medicine Buddha mantra it will never be reborn in the lower realms.

If we don’t purify negative karma, when dying because of negative karma that not been purified, so we will be reborn in the lower realms as a hell being, hungry ghost or animal, and repeatedly without end. We need to purify the negative karma now. If you cannot bear the sickness now, how can we bear the suffering of the lower realms?

Medicine Buddha mantra prevents us from experiencing these related suffering, it is more precious than gold, diamonds or wish-fulfilling jewels all this wealth means nothing because it can’t purify all the negative karma.  Medicine Buddha mantra is precious because it leaves imprints of the whole path to enlightenment in your mind; it helps you to have realizations of the enlightenment.

The Immortality Buddha and Bodhisattvas.

Amitayus Buddha, White Tara and Namgyalma / Ushnisha Vijaya are known as the three long-life Buddha and Bodhisattvas in the Vajrayana Buddhism. In the Vajrayana Buddhism a Buddha is described as having three bodies: a form body (Nirmanakaya), an apparitional body (Sambhogakaya) and an ultimate truth body (Dharmakaya).

Amitabha [阿彌陀佛] and Amitayus [無量壽佛] are the same Buddha. Amitayus is the manifestation of Amitabha Buddha for longevity.  Amita literally means "Infinite" Ayus means "Life" So take it together Amitayus means " Buddha whose life is boundless". Amitabha Buddha is the form body and the second, Amitayus Buddha, is the apparitional body. The important iconographic difference between the two, Buddhas :-

Amitabha Buddha
Amitabha has a Buddha appearance. Amitabha Buddha is depicted red in color and holds a black begging bowl in the lap with both hands.
Amitayus Buddha
Amitayus  Buddha has a Bodhisattva appearance, Amitayus Buddha also depicted red in color and holds a long-life vase in the lap with both hands. The long life vase, which contains the nectar of immortality.  Amitayus Buddha is belongs to one of most the important and popular set known as the Three Long-life Buddha families, namely  the followings:-
White Tara
White Tara (Sitatara) is associated with long life. Her mantra is often chanted with a particular person in mind. She’s another representation of compassion, and she’s pictured as being endowed with seven eyes. (Look at the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and her forehead) to symbolize the watchfulness of the compassionate mind.
Ushnisha Vijaya / Namgyalma
Ushnisha Vijaya / Namgyalma combines aspects of three deities (for this reason her three heads), each associated with a Sadhana (wish). Ushnisha Vijaya has a white colored body, three faces and eight arms. The middle face is white symbolizing the elimination for all misfortunes, the right face is yellow manifests her Compassion for all beings, and the left face is blue and to some extent wrathful signifies her skill at cutting through ignorance through wrathful means......

For more details of Ushnisha Vijaya / Namgyalma, please visit us at the following:-

By practising and reciting the mantras of Amitayus Buddha, White Tara and Namgyalma or Ushnisha Vijaya can save us from untimely death. We can recite the mantras of the Amitayus Buddha, White Tara and Namgyalma or Ushnisha Vijaya for our spiritual Gurus, Lamas or love ones, so that they will remain long life and healthy.

With the recitation of prayers for our precious Gurus, master and teachers that they will be able to turn the wheel of Dharma as long as possible to benefit all sentient beings in the Samsara world.

Mahamudra - The Great Moments Within You

Feeling of impermanence
Just putting some hair and holding it on your palms
Can you feel that you are holding the hair? We don't,
This is the symbolic that how impermanence we always don't realize it,
But the enlightened beings and Buddha can sense and feel it.

Many people don't like to talk about impermanence especially in the morning, impermanence doesn't sound positive and it is like inviting the negative things to us. But we don’t know what’s coming next, we can’t predict the future, and our control is rather limited in shaping our fate. The only thing we can truly be sure of is our experience in this current moment. That is all we have. People come and go. Friendships fade. Relationships end. Bodies change. Assets depreciate. Nothing is guaranteed.
So, rather than focusing on the next accomplishment, material item, or relationship that will bring you that “everlasting happiness,” remember that nothing is eternal, nothing can bring you a static sense of joy, thought and feelings will come and go,  and this moment is all you really have–so focus on it instead.

When we wake up, just feel like a flower opening up itself for the day, preparing for the precious moments that we are still breathing. Do not easily being affected by our emotions, if we easily being affected by the emotions we may not produce and positive results and actions. Treasure every moment that we have and with all the positive ways to practice Dharma, to benefit self and others by making them happy and less suffering.
Wake up and let meditate on our body and mind- resting meditation, sit straight , relax, just drop anything out and start the breathing or resting something slowly and let go , let it be free. Be alert on your breathing and just do it in a natural way , just focusing and be mindful and remind us not to cling to any thoughts, just watch it comes and go, relax, don't cling to it, keep focusing the natural ways of breathing. Let visualize yourself, meditate with the rainbow of light, nothing will stay permanent,
Visualize  the rainbow of light , let the light gradually and slowly merge into you, you are now having the new crystal clear  body and minds. All the negative things , the poison minds all vanishing, relax and open your eyes and with the positive of you.

Thank you for reading, may you find peace and great bliss. With your support it helps to spread the Buddha’s precious teachings and turning the Dharma wheels in the world.

The Great Perfection - Body Of Light ( Chapter 2 )

The way of true happiness is when we can free ourselves from all odds and to be able to liberate ourselves and others from the existence of birth, old age, sickness and death.

Rainbow Body is a mysterious phenomenon of Tibetan Buddhism. A Lama who has acquired the highest forms of accomplishment can manifest what is called "the rainbow body" or "body of light". It is said that the physical body of those who studied Buddhism very deeply will turn into a rainbow.

The ultimate fruition of the practices is a body of pure light, called a rainbow body.  Rainbow body is a level of realization and a phenomenon that when the person died, his body is transformed partially, or totally into five pure lights.

This means either the physical body become much smaller than before, and the skin quality become as freshness as a newborn baby, or even left nothing behind. This phenomenon is hard to understand according to modern science, but it has been well documented in the history of Tibet Buddhism.
Lama Karma Rinpoche

A Yogi or Lama who has acquired the highest forms of accomplishment can manifest "the rainbow body" or the body of light". It is a body made not of flesh but of pure light. The culmination of one’s life into the rainbow body is widely recognised as a sign of extreme sanctity. The process described in these traditions is generally considered to take approximately seven days, during which time the body progressively shrinks in size. This shrinking is proportional and may stop at approximately small child size.

The process described in these traditions is generally considered to take approximately seven days, during which time the body progressively shrinks in size. This shrinking is proportional and may stop at approximately small child size. The Body of Light is light without shadow; it is awareness without obscurations; it is omniscience; it is pure space. It is the ultimate fruit of spiritual cultivation.

The Body of Light represents a complete, total, and radical transformation of one’s status of being, a rediscovery of what was primordially present, and this condition is permanent. It is Awareness itself and is dependent on nothing else.
A fully enlightened person who has the ability to liberate their body into light. There are 3 different levels or stages of transforming into the Rainbow body:
A brief introduction only
1) The normal rainbow body [Trekcho practise]
2) Rainbow body of light [Togal practise]
3) A rainbow body of great transference [Ja Lu Phowa Chenpo practise]

1: The normal Rainbow body that occurs only after body death There are no physical signs indicating the start of the process before death, and once physical death occurs, it takes on average 7 days for the body to shrink and dissolve into light. Most of the time, a small child-size body remains behind, and in more advanced yogis, only hair and nails remain.

The process described in these traditions is generally considered to take approximately seven days, during which time the body progressively shrinks in size. This shrinking is proportional and may stop at approximately small child size. The Body of Light is light without shadow; it is awareness without obscurations; it is omniscience; it is pure space. Tasha Lhamo, rainbow body shrink into 40cm in size.

2 - The advanced level is known as the Rainbow body, in this level all the signs are showing up while the yogi or Lama is still alive. To dissolving into light might go really fast ,but in most cases it takes month to years to complete, all while remaining fully functional. It is also possible that the yogi or Lama who is in the middle of this process slows it down or is unable to continue the process and dies before the completion of the Rainbow body.  If the process is continued the body will start to shrink and shine real light over time until it reaches the size of a baby and then as a flash of bright rainbow light will disappear into emptiness forever.

3 -The most advanced and extremely rare level is the attainment of the Rainbow body of great transference. In this level the yogi or Lama not only dissolves the body completely into light but remains functional and visible as light.

In Tibetan Buddhism it can be realized in three ways; through the practices of Anuttara tantra, the special practices of the Kalachakra Tantra , or through Dzogchen. When Guru Rinpoche, Padmasambhava left at the end of his time in physical form he dissolved his body completely back to their natural elements leaving nothing behind. This was the start of what has become the Nyingma tradition and is the foundation of Tibetan Buddhism as we have come to know it. At the heart of the Nyingma tradition is the practice of Dzogchen otherwise called Ati Yoga or the Great Perfection.
The great Yogi Milarepa (1050–1123) dissolved entirely into light, leaving no relics behind at all. The culmination of one’s life into the rainbow body is widely recognised as a sign of extreme sanctity. The practise found In the Kagyu tradition, this is known as the Mahamudra. The Dzogchen from the Nyingma tradition and the Mahamudra from the Kagyu tradition are both identical in essence. You may follow one or the other; however, each has its own unique instructions. In each system, Mahamudra and Dzogchen, various methods are used to reveal the nature of bare awareness itself.
Mahamudra in Sanskrit literally means "The Great Seal." The Tibetan word for mahamudra is "Chakgya Chenpo," which is often looked upon as the highest practise of meditation and most definitive path to enlightenment. This is a unique feature of the Tibetan Kagyu lineage. According to the Dzogchen of the Nyinma tradition, it is the natural, primordial state or natural condition of a human being, and the practise of Dzogchen is a body of teachings and meditations aimed at realising that condition. According to Dzogchen literature, Dzogchen is the highest and most definitive path to enlightenment.

Aspiration For Bodhichitta
For those in whom the precious Bodhichitta has not arisen
May it arise and not decrease.
But increase further and further.

Dedication of Merit
By this merit, may we then obtain omniscience?
Having defeated the enemies wrongdoings
May we liberate migrants from the ocean of existence.
With its stormy waves of birth, old age, sickness, and death.
